The president of Burundi, Pierre Nkurunziza, has died after suffering a heart attack.
The government in a statement on Tuesday, June 9, announced that President Nkurunziza died at Karusi hospital, Aljazeera reported.
The statement which was posted on twitter disclosed that the president was admitted to the hospital on Saturday, June 6, after feeling unwell but suffered a heart attack on Monday, June 8, and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Nkurunziza was due to step down from the presidency in August 2020, after 15 years in power.
He was 55. The government said there would be a period of national mourning for seven days from Tuesday and that flags would be flown at half-mast.
